Couture, also known as Haute Couture is a concept that has been around since the 17th century. The style of Haute Couture, which is French for ‘high dressmaking’ or ‘high sewing’ started in Paris, and is believed to be invented by Rose Bertin, the designer for the French brand, Queen Marie Antoinette.

Couture is clothing that is handmade and custom fitted for clients, such as nightwear designed for red carpet events, or a bridal gown designed for a wedding.

Once transportation became more accessible throughout Europe, more people started visiting Paris, and began purchasing clothing from the city, due to the quality and high end techniques of Haute Couture garments. As a result of this, Haute Couture became a popular term that is a staple in the fashion world today. Many Couture pieces are responsible for the fashion trends that we see and wear, such as metallic tones, jumpsuits and peplum accents.

Couture was something that was only exclusive to Paris, but as fashion became more accessible to people of all backgrounds, the rules changed, and Couture can be made by any designer in any part of the world.
